Time & Space – Turnstile

Turnstile’s 2018 Time & Space is a hardcore punk album from the band that now has become one of the few mainstream hardcore punk bands active in 2022. This album stays more true to the roots of the genre, which is why some hardcore punk fans have some inhibitions about the bands change of direction with Glow On, which is one of my favorite albums that has come out in recent years, potentially of all time (can be found on the past favorites page!).

Contrasting the two albums is also very interesting especially in terms of what I deem “listener accessibility”, as in, if you’re getting someone into the band, or if it’s your first time checking them out, sort of an easier listen to get into the more dissonant, in the weeds cuts (which of course are often the best). However, this is not a shot at Time & Space, which still delivers what I love about Turnstile’s music – great energy and certainly keeping the punk, but also unique riffs, and much more harmonies than I typically find in a punk album. I love Brendan’s vocals here, and they seem to inhabit a more classic punk space, even metal-y in some regard. The percussion continues to deliver (and will continue to even further in Glow On) and the bands performance as a whole is great.

Favorite songs: Big Smile, Generator, I Don’t Wanna Be Blind, High Pressure, (Lost Another) Piece Of My World, Right To Be.
