365 – New Music Daily

I don’t quite know where to begin this blurb. I’ve landed on – this is not a Jay-Z Linkin Park Collab, not an MGK punk effort, or anything of the like. This is Lil Yachty doing psych rock well. That in itself is a ridiculous statement – madlib esque – but god damn this album is entrancing. Mesmerizing perhaps. Certainly confusing. But rightly so.

The album kicks off with a 7 minute psych rock ballad which is musically gorgeous, and that is a theme of the entire album – incredible musicality throughout. As stated before – this album was certainly confusing throughout – but I really was captivated by the whole thing and it has grabbed me in the coming days – especially some of my favorite songs. I do think there is a bit of a hump to get over in Yachty’s vocals, on certain tracks more than others, and I can certainly see how someone could not enjoy this album. For me, it’s one of the most unique albums that I have listened to in my life and has grown on me – even captivated multiple listens front to back after the first (including a near immediate runback).

I also must praise yachty for making a legit album. I have shared this opinion with many people in the past but there is a clear distinction between an album vs. a collection of songs grouped together with a cover and a nice name. This album flows like a motherfucker. The transitions are incredible. If you’re listening to this without looking at what song is currently playing, it’s difficult to distinguish where one track ends and begins – which is great. This album will certainly have a polarizing affect on some and if you don’t like it – understandable. But I thoroughly enjoy it.
