OK Computer – Radiohead

I need to state a couple disclaimers before sharing my opinions on this one.

  1. I am not a musical hipster in the sense that I do not like what is popular. Or try to detest it with some weird conscious or subconscious agenda. Fuck, Nevermind is one of my favorite albums of all time, and if he never went antisemitic (amongst many, many other things, I’m just choosing one) I would confidently put Kanye as my favorite artist.
  2. I really, really tried to like this album (and it’s not even that I disliked it, as you’ll see). And I kinda see why people laud it.

I just couldn’t really get into it that much. It really doesn’t appeal to me as a listener. I could just end my review there, but I really want to get my piece out on this one. I think Thom Yorke is kind of pretentious. I know nothing about him, he could be a great guy. He could donate to charities and youth sports and always stop when a person is in need. He could spend 90% of his time giving to others and is living paycheck to paycheck because he is that giving.

But you know what? I bet he’s not. I bet he’s pretentious. I also did not realize that a lower pitch voice could whine like that. It annoys me to my core, my body goes into fight or flight.

All that being said, not for me, maybe for you, and I do think Radiohead is a good band. But you shouldn’t have to feel like you are forcing yourself to like something, especially something so critically acclaimed. Just not my shit.

Favorite songs: Airbag, Paranoid Android, Exit Music (for a film) (pretentious), Karma Police, Climbing Up the Walls, Lucky

  1. I definitely agree with you that Thom’s voice is annoying–and I do feel that Radiohead has some jam to it, but an overrated band, that I frequently confuse with Coldplay.
