That’s right, this album is called Glockoma. It’s not even the first Glockoma (I have not listened to the first Glockoma). For a little perspective, Key Glock is a rapper from Memphis who was closely associated with Young Dolph (RIP). Glock has been an up and comer in one of the fastest rising hip-hop cities in the US, first popping up on most people’s radar with Russian Cream in early 2018. Needless to say, this song about a known blunt flavor coinciding with my freshman year of college was a welcomed coincidence.
This one is firmly in the newly named for me, but probably not for you tier. I have an affinity for this style of rap – which is hard to describe – but is certainly an acquired taste for most. Memphis has a really different scene, with Three Six Mafia being one end of the spectrum, NLE Choppa being another, and guys like Dolph and Glock being somewhere in the middle. It’s a very straightforward brand of rap, and almost immediately you’ll be able to ascertain if you will or will not like it. Pretty simple beats, hard 808s, braggadocios lines, etc. I don’t think this is the best album of the genre though – mostly because there are no features. Although Glock does say on the last song, aptly named Fuck a Feature – “Fuck the rap game, I pay myself for a feature” – I am of the camp that one would’ve helped.
Favorite songs: Dirt, Randy Orton, 2 For 1, From Nothing, Homicide Gvng, Fuck a Feature
