LA rapper-producer Blxst has gained some warranted hype lately, based off of a few songs off of this album + his recent contributions on the latest Kendrick release. Blxst gets some points here for producing most of this record – a feat that will always grant you respect in my mind. However, this album certainly has some problems, specifically with a redundant sound throughout, with little differentiating a lot of the songs, and resulting in a good amount of mid songs.
If you pull out any one of these songs and listen to it, sure, maybe it won’t have a wow factor, but it certainly won’t be bad (except maybe Just say’n, that song sucked), but overall the album is just not that great. There’s nothing wrong with the overall sound – a lot of groovy beats with nice vocals and guitar riffs – but overall it gets old fast. The second half does redeem it a bit.
