Since I Have a Lover – 6LACK

Was a bit disappointed with this release from Atlanta artist 6lack. It’s a big sonic shift for him – he has sat comfortably in the modern r&b structure for some time. More the hard 808s driving the songs than what we see here, which is driven by guitar loops and has a totally different feel than most of his music that we have heard.

I welcome changes for artists, and have talked about the debate of staying with a “signature” sound versus evolving as an artist, and will always respect and understand direction shifts from creators. That does not mean that it will always work – and I think this one, for me, works more against 6lack than in his favor. The songs that have more of the older 6lack feel are better, and the newer ones just get a bit repetitive and lack some depth. This could also be a not for me, but maybe for you contender, but I bet it just ends up in solid.

Also, it’s pronounced black. Not six-lack.

Favorite songs: Inwood Hill Park, chasing feeling, preach, Talkback, Talk, Rent Free

  1. Not my jam, but I appreciate your review, especially when talking about how people people shift and pivot in their creative journey.
