Fucking Great/God Tier:
Foo Fighters – Foo Fighters: My favorite Foo Fighters album, bolstered by Dave being a one-man show here (and of course, reading his book!).
Funkadelic – Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On: Some of the best (but not their best), from some of the best.
GoldLink – At What Cost: Unique, groovy, sonically diverse album, and probably will forever be Goldlink’s best.
Haitus Kaiyote – Choose Your Weapon: Amazing song structure, lyrics, and god dammit some beautiful Rhodes.
Pretty damn good:
Beach House – Depression Cherry: Let’s get dreamy.
The Blackbyrds – Action: Let’s get funky.
Children of Zeus – Travel Light: Carried by the vocalist, but seriously unique and groovy.
Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA – SCARING THE HOES: Wild and absurd.
Haitus Kaiyote – Mood Valiant: Such a god damn good band!!!
Foo Fighters – The Colour and The Shape: A bit too rocky, but still a great album with some classic Foo Fighers songs.
Little Simz – NO THANK YOU: A great sophomore album from one of the best female rappers in the game.
Mild High Club – Skiptracing: Nostalgia bumps this one up again, but I’m a big fan of Alex’s lyricism and approach to music.
Toots & the Maytals – Funky Kingston: Would be highest tier if not for fucking John Denver cover!!!
Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes – What Kinda Music: Great stuff as usual from Tom, and Yussef Dayes drumming only adds.
Toro y Moi – Outer Peace: Let’s DANCE!
Solid:
Action Bronson – Only for Dolphins: Can’t go any lower when Latin Grammy’s is in play.
Children of Zeus – Balance: A notch down from their earlier album, but still good stuff.
Giveon – When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time: A very flawed album with good high points.
Kali Uchis – Red Moon in Venus: A bit underwhelming, but not as much as others.
Key Glock – Glockoma 2: A very long 40 minutes, but good replay value on some songs.
Masego – Masego: Inconsistent, but his musical ability triumphs.
Terrance Martin – Dinner Party: A quick, fun jazz-R&B-soul album.
Yellowman – Mister Yellowman: Not my favorite Yellowman, but Yellowman nonetheless.
For lack of a better term, Mid:
Blxst – No Love Lost: Deeply inconsistent and repetitive.
Foo Fighters – Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace: My least favorite record from Foo Fighters.
Freddie Gibbs – Piñata: For the diehard Freddie fans (none of you), this might be a hot take.
Mild High Club – Going Going Gone: Not bad, but really not great either.
Sonder – Too Late to Die Young, Into: Super mid.
Radiohead tier:
Radiohead – OK Computer: I almost named this pretentious tier, so be thankful (addressed to whoever the Radiohead fans are in the world)
Disappointing:
6lack – Since I Have a Lover: Weird sound pivot.
Mac Ayres – Comfortable Enough: Mac really disappointed here, more than I can even express in a sentence.
