NEVER ENOUGH – Daniel Caesar

Ah Danny. You’ve not made the best of what could’ve been. Freudian is one of my favorite contemporary R&B albums, and most that listened to that, his tiny desk, or even just Get You or Japanese Denim would agree with the fact that this man has a fucking incredible voice and in most cases, is a fantastic songwriter.

Then, he started being weird. That tragic Instagram Live. The weird John Mayer/Dave Chappelle exchange. I apologize if you are not up on Daniel Caesar lore, but I will not be clarifying. If you know, you know. Case Study 01 was certainly a flop regardless of it following up Freudian.

The singles for this album really got me excited. Let Me Go was easily the best thing he came out with in 5 years, and Do You Like Me? was also great. But this was just not that great. Very underwhelming. Better than Case Study, but nothing close to Freudian. When you’ve come out with an album that showcases full potential & even leaves room to improve, it makes underwhelming future releases that much worse.

A run of the mill Freudian song came up on shuffle right after I was done with this album, and it just made it that much more frustrating. God dammit.

Also a song called Homiesexual??? Unbelievable. And yes, if you haven’t heard, it’s as bad as it sounds.

Favorite songs: Valentina, Let Me Go, Always, Cool, Buyer’s Remorse, Superpowers

  1. I really enjoyed the Tiny Desk that you had previously recommended. I do think that there is almost some 1980’s British sound here.

This made me laugh out loud: Also a song called Homiesexual??? Unbelievable. And yes, if you haven’t heard, it’s as bad as it sounds. ________________________________
