I Want You – Marvin Gaye

Don’t tell anyone but I think this is better than What’s Going On. At least damn close to it, the only thing that this album is lacking is the powerful songwriting. Which, upon writing, does feel like quite an important factor.

This album kicks off with the now (re)popularized I Want You, the foundation of The Heart Part 5, which was the teaser to Kendrick Lamar’s most recent album (which may have a reprised relisten and review upcoming).

I Want You sets the tone for this album – a beautiful blend of Soul, R&B and funk – and overall a masterclass in vocal layering and harmonies. Marvin might be one of the most underrated artists of all time, something that seems to be increasing given that his modern day legacy is largely reduced to sex jokes and people in court for ripping him off. I plan to continue to run through the discog, he’s now landed 2 out of 2 albums on the fucking great tier.

Favorite songs: I Want You, Come Live With Me Angel, Feel All My Love Inside, I Wanna Be Where You Are, All The Way Around, Soon I’ll Be Loving You Enough, After The Dance

  1. Oh yes, this is fantastic. Thank you for placing Marvin in the category to which he clearly belongs. ________________________________
