Supernatural – Santana

One of the best-selling albums of all time, Supernatural, is quite an interesting front to back. It starts with (Da Le) Yaleo, a (great) super groovy tune with Spanish vocals and strong electric guitar riffs sparsed throughout the track, seemingly setting the tone for a groovy listen.

Nope, not at all. What’s next? A Dave Matthews song. The Dave Matthews song isn’t bad at all, but what the fuck. Additionally, with any mention of Dave Matthews, I have to mention that I saw him with two very young women on a street in Amsterdam. Very interesting celebrity sighting, and one you probably do not care about hearing. There was a time in my life where I actually enjoyed the Everlast song that follows, but listening to it now is absolutely brutal.

This is the theme of a lot of the tracks here – beautiful instrumentalization with some really strangely placed features, some that work for me (Smooth, Maria Maria, Do You Like The Way) some that I think are so strange (the two aforementioned epitomize this). Overall, the deeper cuts that are more Latin sounding really appeal to me. Even the non deep cut in this variety, Corazon Espinado, is better than a lot of the weird feature cuts.

Overall, it seems to be a little bit all over the place and sums up as a Santana album with more of a pop appeal than anything else. Though Smooth and Maria Maria are still timeless. I have a feeling the lesser known Santana will be more enjoyable for me.

Favorite songs: (Da Le) Yaleo, Africa Bamba, Smooth, Do You Like The Way, Maria Maria, Migra, Corazon Espinado, Primavera, The Calling

  1. Your entire second paragraph is hilarious and spot-on!

I think, for me, I’ve always been hit or miss with Santana, which is not to deny his phenomenal skills as a musician, and more a lack of diversity in sound. ________________________________
