If you’re reading this, congrats. You have finally finished the expedition that was scrolling past that title. I get Ziggy is a strange guy, but Jesus, what a title. Unforgettable.
This is one of my favorite albums, if not my favorite, that I’ve listened to during this quest, which has now spanned past 125 albums this year. To think that is only a third of what I’ll listen to is, to say the least, a bit hard to wrap my head around. Nonetheless, this occupies one of the top spots.
First off, it has the nostalgia value. My mom and I would jam to some Bowie – I especially remember loving Suffragate City as a young kid, which I still love to hear to this day. This album is known by Starman, aka, there’s a staaaaaaaaarmaaaaan waiting in the sky, however I think the album really is much more than that. The song before it, Moonage Daydream (also the name of the recent Bowie movie that I did not watch), is not only my favorite song on the album but a showcase of the caliber of the incredible sci-fi lyricism that’s found throughout the record.
It’s also filled with many derivatives of rock, fantastic vocals, amazing rhythmic guitar & some mean solos. I did receive one critique on this album when sharing it with my friend (hey Liam, if you’re reading this), which is that the drums are a bit rudamentary throughout. This is certainly a fair criticism – but the previously mentioned rhythmic guitar serves a very important percussive role throughout the whole album.
Overall, easily one of my favorites of this whole year, and an amazing album from one of the most unique and creative musicians that we’ve ever known. RIP.
