It is Beatles week! It has been so long since I’ve listened to Beatles albums front to back, so I’m going to listen to 7 this week, in absolutely no order, and interspersed with other albums! A methodic process. Abbey Road is up first.
This album is known for two of the most famous and iconic Beatles songs. I’ll name them, in case you were wondering. Here Comes the Sun and Come Together, both of which have aged well, one of which I can play on the ukelele. Necessary information to convey.
Come Together is a lovely opening to this album, especially going into Something, which is one of the best Beatles songs (written by George!). Then we get to Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. I love this album a lot so I’ll keep this brief and just say this song is bad. I liked it when I was 8. It should’ve stayed in memory form.
4-9 are all fantastic – Oh! Darling with some soul influence, Ringo’s Octopus’s Garden is weird and great, I Want You (She’s So Heavy) is an underrated Beatles cut, Aforementioned Here Comes The Sun, Because, You Never Give Me Your Money. All are great.
Then, the album goes into a Floyd-The Wall-esque run of short songs that flow beautifully into the next, peaking with She Came In Through the Bathroom Window, which is maybe my favorite song on the album and seriously one of the better songs in their entire discography. Re-listen to that if it’s not fresh in your head. This run really elevates the album from me to one with just their hits to arguably their best. The rest of it delivers as well. It’ll be interesting to see where it compares.
