In Rainbows – Radiohead

Thom Yorke has found his way back on here. The pretentious man he is, god dammit, Karma Police has grown on me a lot. I don’t think, and never had thought, that Radiohead was bad BUT I still think OK Computer is overrated. However that song is better than I thought it was. I apologize and admit my faults. Just this once.

To set the scene while adding in a layer of unnecessary repetition, I’ve been listening to Karma Police a lot. Crazy. So I figure why not give them another shot. I’ve heard the analogy that In Rainbows is Radiohead’s Rubber Soul (am I italicizing correctly? I’m trying. Also, foreshadowing!), as in its sort of the hipster’s favorite album. I like Rubber Soul. It’s good, and I’m aware it’s very different.

It is very different. There are a lot more electronic chops of things, and the sound varies from U2 ish to Coldplay ish to just Radiohead stuff with more electronic sound and less of the acoustic rock that dominated OK Computer.

It started off pretty nicely. 15 Step is good, although I hate the headphone splitting with the guitar. Bodysnatchers is really nice, and Weird Fishes/Arpeggi has a beautiful guitar melody with those fast hitting snares. Then, the problem is identified for me. Thom goes into that god damn falsetto. I know some people hate the Kendrick high pitch voice (think the beginning of The Art of Peer Pressure), I don’t understand why, and maybe that’s because I love him so damn much.

I feel like you would have to be on the brink of building a Thom Yorke altar in your bedroom to enjoy his falsetto. I fucking hate it. I could go into a lot of analogies to what it sounds like, but I’m trying to like Radiohead. I really am trying my best. They’re maybe the most popular alternative rock band. Fuck though, his falsetto stinks.

Overall, I do find this one to be more enjoyable overall, but maybe… just maybe… I have to go back to OK Computer once more… Probably will end up being about 2-3 years.

Favorite songs: 15 Step, Bodysnatchers, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, House of Cards, Jigsaw Falling into Place

  1. Still not a fan of Radiohead (except that they wrote Creep, which has been covered so well by so many other bands!). If you want to hear a nice falsetto, check-out DakhaBrakha, with “Light” being a really good album showcasing Marco’s talents thereof. ________________________________
