KAYTRANADA and Amine’s collaborative album comes nearly 8 years after their 2015 collaboration on Amine’s debut mixtape Calling Brio. Religious blog readers of mine know I love KAYTRANADA, his album Bubba, and pretty much everything he touches. They may not know I also love Amine – his album Good For You (the one with Caroline) had some really nice songs, and his two follow-ups have also been pretty solid.
Needless to say, aside from the amazing single 4EVA with Pharrell, I was greatly anticipating this collab album. While I did find it enjoyable and filled with a bunch of songs to dance to, it was underwhelming. It’s possible my expectations were a bit too high, but I felt like the two singles, 4EVA and Rebuke (along with the Twitter teaser of Sossaup), made it seem like a dancey summer album was on the way. It didn’t fully deliver how I was expecting it to, as Amine’s lyricism lacked on some songs and others just didn’t really match the vibe that was set. All in all, a solid effort, but a bit underwhelming based on how good I thought it would be, and how good I think these two could be together. The best songs are fantastic though.
Also, get Big Sean out of here. He’s on a publicity redemption tour but he stinks. Stop.
