Go For Your Guns – Isley Brothers

The Isley Brothers are one of the more underrated groups of all time simply due to the amount of Isley Brothers songs that we’ve all heard and did not know they were Isley Brothers songs or songs by the Isley Brothers or samples from Isley Brothers songs. Right?

Seriously though, the amount of renditions/samples/covers of Footsteps In The Dark (check out the one by SiR!) is somewhat unbelievable. The Ice Cube song is literally just the Isley Brother’s beat, there were essentially 0 changes. This album doesn’t even have It’s Your Thing which is not too far behind. Also I have listened to this song many times, as have I to Them Changes, and yet it took me dozens of listens to place the drum openings.

This thing starts off with the stankiest of the stank in the Pride, the clav and bass slaps are fucking amazing, segueing into the aformentioned legendary second song, Footsteps In The Dark. Overall, it’s a nice, smooth R&B/funk/soul record that has a few highlights. I was expecting a bit more from this one as there are some Isley Brothers songs that I absolutely love, but as a cohesive effort it definitely has high and low points. As well as some strange points. Voyage to Atlantis?

  1. “Stankiest of Stank” is spot-on! Har.

By the way, I belive that your aunt Annie has some kind of connection to this band—I think she may have dated the nephew of one of the original members, or something. ?? ________________________________
