Let It Be – The Beatles

Beatles week has turned into Beatles six weeks, but alas, we persevere.

The last album to be recorded by The Beatles, Let It Be is one that I somewhat brushed off as being listed as popular on Spotify simply because its plays are bolstered by one of the most, if not the most, famous Beatles songs of all time in the title track (obviously). And honestly, Let It Be is nice, but I feel like it’s so overplayed at this point it was also a major reason why I stayed away from this one in the first place. However, Let It Be is much more than that.

From the opening track Two of Us, a laid back love song that transitions into the more upbeat Dig a Pony (All I want is Youu, that one), then back into melancholy with Across the Universe, then a sort of half transition into pacing with I Me Mine (sorry for this sentence but there is no other way. There’s just no way), this album showcases the Beatles musical versatility, much like Abbey Road does.

The rest of the album is filled with a very OK stretch around Let It Be, all the way up to For You Blue (A Long Winding Road does not do it for me at all), which is not only fantastic but sounds like it could be an Indie song from the past few years. Also shocking that Get Back is on this. I thought that was from something totally different. Bizarre.

Overall this album ranks pretty highly for me, potentially unseating Rubber Soul as #2 so far. Sgt. Peppers remains far behind. I imagine the only potential #1 still left is the White Album which is an undertaking from A to B.

Favorite songs: Two Of Us, Dig a Pony, Across the Universe, I Me Mine, I’ve Got A Feeling, For You Blue, Get Back

  1. This is personally one of my favorite Beatles songs (thank you, George, we love you!), and overall this is one of their best albums (I’m with you on the Long and Winding Road…a bit uninspired).

You talk about how music is associated with time and place, and this album brings me back to a time and place as a young listener, and where each Beatles discovery led to a re-listen and more discovery. ________________________________
