I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You – Aretha Franklin

It’s been a long time coming that I dive into Aretha’s discography. Argued as one of the best singers of all time, Aretha certainly backs that claim on this album – starting off with an impassioned, simplistic message from a woman to a man in “Respect” – elegantly belting each word with immaculate control (also, this is an Otis Redding cover!).

The album weaves throughout themes of relationships, Aretha’s feelings, a rare sexual song from her (Doctor Feelgood), all while going back and forth between the upbeat and more subdued soul instrumentals. It also includes a fantastic rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”. All in all, a fantastic introduction to Aretha as well as an amazing soul record.

Favorite songs: No skips. Favorites (just to pick from all the amazing songs) are Respect, Drown In My Own Tears and I’ve Never Loved A Man (the way I love you)

  1. One of the greatest albums of all time, in my humble opinion. The depth of her emotion is covered across many many tunes and the song you chose, “Respect”, is an Anthem for all people, especially women.

On a separate note, her performance of “Think” in the Blues Brothers Movie is instantly iconic ?? ________________________________
