Cave World – Viagra Boys

The Viagra Boys most recent release, Cave World (a relisten), retains the bands signature sound while also providing a hilarious theme of monkey to human evolution, playing on some of the more absurd aspects of society, satirizing them, and explaining how some things are different now because we are not apes. Literally. And they do it hilariously. Take the lyrics on troglodyte:

He says he don’t believe in science
He thinks that all the news is fake
And late at night he sits on his computer
And writes about the things he hates

But if it was a million years ago
And we were still living in caves
You would not be welcomed by the other apes
‘Cause you evolved a bit too late

This expands to references to vaccine conspiracy theories (they’re putting microchips in the vaccine, man, these kids are growin’ up with animal hair!), or aspects of Sebastian’s personal life, past and present (Baby Criminal, Ain’t No Thief, both of which are amazing and hilarious), and ending with a simplistic chant-based outro – Leave society, be, a monkey. This album is a perfect representation, again, of what makes the Viagra Boys so good – hilarious lyrics, ingenious concepts, all while not sacrificing a tinge of quality musically. The driving drums, guitar, bass, all continue to deliver the Swedish-American band’s signature sound. Check this one out and Leave Society, Be, A Monkey.

  1. So, yeah, these guys definitely sound different than other bands. I don’t know how I’d describe them (punk? rock?)…though I imagine that Frank Zappa would approve of their intelligent and insightful lyricism… ________________________________
