I apologize on the behalf of WordPress for the formatting on this one. Maybe it looks completely fine and my computer just stinks. They certainly aren’t mutually exclusive.
Sometimes you may click on things on my blog, such as this one, and think that I’m cheating. Let’s revisit the criteria of a new album meeting one of A) Never listened once, B) Only listened once, C) May have listened more than once, but certainly not within the last 5 years. This one fits firmly in B, and it certainly replayed as such, as I did not remember basically the entire second half of this album.
Californication starts out HOT. Not just in terms of the instrumental & Kiedis delivery of Around The World – But from there, we go to Parallel Universe (by the way… up until this moment when I went to copy and paste the absurd chorus lyrics, I thought the chorus of this song was “Grasshopper Sidewalker, Imma, Californicaaaaate…. it’s not at all.), onto Scar Tissue, Otherside, Get On Top, Californication.
Easy 6 for 6 to start. But god damn, this album falls off a cliff. Easily is not bad, then it goes into a bad run. I really do not like Porcelain. If I wanted sad boi Indie Music I am certainly not calling up RHCP.
Emit Remmus is hilariously bad. Like, go listen to it bad. LONDON IN THE SUMMATIMEEEEEE. What the fuck is going on there?? The album is slightly redeemed with I Like Dirt, in (major) part because it’s called I Like Dirt. This Velvet Glove, also not bad.
It then descends into this wholly mid run of RHCP sounding songs that do nothing for me at all. Kiedis becomes so annoying at this point of the record that when Road Trippin’ (which has way more plays than I thought it would) comes around, and he starts talking about how he’s driving and they have snacks (real, second line of the song), I am ready to throw my headphones across the room, train, highway, etc.
Shades of the John Legend album here, though this one is lauded as being great (I think?). I was wholly underwhelmed, put off, and upset, as I am now. I have heard that Kiedis memoir is good, but that you have to stop reading it to still think he is a decent person. Maybe I’ll read it now, even if I have to sacrifice Otherside.
Favorite songs: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Get On Top, Californication, I Like Dirt, This Velvet Glove, Quixoticelixer
