Another recommendation from the ol’ Spotify algorithm, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, an Australian outfit, produce exactly the kind of music that you would expect. There isn’t a need to mince words here – this is some good psych rock music. I wouldn’t call it sonically groundbreaking by any means – but the riffs are cool, the vocals are good – the real differentiator in the music of the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets is definitely the lyricism and themes of some of these songs. For example – this is the premise of the song “Found God in a Tomato (pronounced tom-auto, naturally) – copy and pasted lyrics:
I’m barely operating
Yet a functional being
I always seemed to be vacant
Parading myself as an abductee
Then one day I was transposed
From a simple young man
To a godly tomato that held all existence
And told me that we should expand
Later in the song, some further pondering by their lead singer:
I wonder how many more fruits
Can connect to my head
I would take a papaya
Travel the world and the universe as two best friends
Certainly tapping into some of the same influence as someone like Hunter S. Thompson – or maybe a watered down version of him based on Hunter’s daily routine. These lyrics though are delivered through beautifully layered and mixed vocals, dreamy guitar riffs and excellent percussion. These sort of fantastical, out of this world lyrics and themes go on throughout the record, and all in all make a very enjoyable listen, combining these original ideas with some great psychedelic rock. Cool band!
