Metaphorical Music – Nujabes

Metaphorical Music is another very smooth and jazzy hip-hop & instrumental release from the Japanese DJ. This one compares to Modal Soul, which I recently reviewed, fairly 1:1; they both are very mellowed, about half instrumental tracks and half 90s/00s hip-hop songs. I do prefer the sonic profile on Modal Soul to this one – which I found could trend towards elevator music instrumentation or, mostly, in a direction that was a lot less mellowed out. However, a lot of the tracks are great, and it’s still a solid release from Nujabes.

Favorite songs: Blessing It – remix, Kumomi, A day by atmosphere supreme, The Final View, Peaceland

  1. Slight digression: When I was working as a baker in my mid-twenties, I used to share kitchen space with three other people and we all battled for control of the stereo. I was totally into reggae at that time—which drove the two chefs crazy. They were into female-singer-songwriter-balladeers type sounds (the other fella just played talk radio all the day long). One time I headed towards the sound system, and the chefs yelled, “NO REGGAE!” To them, it all sounded like one long song, exactly the same.

The reason I go on and on here is because this type of rap sounds so much like other rap—nothing really stands out to me. Your description fits best here: elevator music instrumentation ________________________________
