Morbid Stuff – Pup

Thank you Mark for this one – Pup is a Toronto band (Canadians!) that is best described as pop-punk – they certainly have the pop punk lead singer voice nailed down perfectly, albeit with a bit of an indie rock lead singer voice flavor (well said, I know.) I am not sure why Spotify discriminates against Pup in Rabies – they never fucking come up. However, whenever I do have some Pup come up, I do enjoy it.

There are certainly other directions I would rather go when I’m listening to shit like this (IDLES lately, Turnstile perennially), but this is a really nice way for those pop lovers, punk non-listeners (you know who you are) to get an easy bridge to a new genre of music. This one is certainly good, much better than a soon to be reviewed band who had a hit album in 2013 (who could it be???)

Favorite songs: Morbid Stuff, Kids, Free At Last, Scorpion Hill, Closure, Bloody Mary, Kate and Ashley, Sibling Rivalry, Bare Hands

  1. This band sounds a bit like a poppier version of Suicidal Tendencies. I’d put them in a mid-tier. ________________________________

  2. […] PUP was on this blog long ago, sporting a sort of emo-punk style that is more common in the genre than I thought. That 2018 album, Morbid Stuff, grew on me quite a bit and did have two songs in my “top songs 2023”. This latest album had some nice songs, but I felt like the more melodic direction of the band doesn’t really fit the lead singer’s style – which is kind of that not-really-that-good-punk-singer-but-works-a-lot style. There’s some songs here, but if you hated this, I would get it. […]
