Vulfpeck – Schvitz

Let’s get this out of the way – Vulfpeck is an all white funk band. AKA an oxymoron, and definitely an argument of the kinds of groups that perpetrate the Elvis taking from Little Richard kind of thing. While I don’t think it necessary applies to a band that is not that well known, it is definitely still worth noting that this is 4 white guys from Michigan. Although there are a bunch of songs on this with Antwuan Stanley stinging, who is not a Vulfpeck member or a white guy.

Sometimes, it does come across as a little blander, and sometimes it completely misses the mark for me. However, there are some damn good Vulfpeck songs in general and on this project. They can play, and they can sing (especially Stanley on the below track). It’s pretty good overall.

Favorite songs: Sauna, New Guru, In Heaven, Serve Somebody (didn’t know this was a Bob Dylan cover, I can’t imagine the Dylan version is better. Take that Bob.), What Did You Mean By Love?

  1. While I do think that the old-man Bob Dylan would appreciate this cover, he’d definitely highlight the vocals by Antwuan Stanley. Again, these videos can be so silly that they distract from the art itself (like, whose idea was it to record near a sauna in bathrobes?)… ________________________________
