White Album/Self-Titled – The Beatles

The final edition of Beatles week! Thank you all for tuning in. Beatles week has turned into arguably the longest week in history, spanning well over 2 months, multiple countries and continents. It’s been quite the ride.

Often proclaimed as the best of the Beatles, the White Album stood as a bit of a daunting task in the Beatles week run through with a runtime of over 90 minutes. Yes, I suppose you can say this is a double album (does it count as 2? I’m still behind.), however it’s really not, especially in the streaming era. It’s all compiled on the same page. It’s got one cover. It’s one album.

Anyways, it’s the same reason why I’m putting off watching Oppenheimer (or Woppenheimer, as Gucci Mane prefers), it’s fucking long man. Not only that, but one of the best parts of the Beatles is their runtimes – most all being 35ish minutes, which I believe is ideal for any album. Give me the best shit. Cut the fat.

Now I did enjoy this album – and have since I was 8 – but I think the combination (Drake Jamaican voice) of listening to quite a bit of the Beatles lately as well as the nature of this album definitely put a damper on the listening experience. This album certainly has some of their best songs – especially While My Guitar Gently Weeps & Blackbird – as well as a nice mix of some deeper cuts: Glass Onion, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Yer Blues, Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except for Me and My Monkey (what does this mean).

However, I think while this album has a really solid output throughout, listening to 90 minutes of the Beatles will definitely wear on you, especially when it includes some of their most playground-y songs (I never want to hear Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da again), and some of their really strange songs (I get the metaphor behind Piggies, but I don’t really want to hear the word Piggies that much in a song). All in all, it is still quite a good album. Is it their best? No.

Based on my listening, I’m going with this as my ranking:

  1. Abbey Road
  2. Let It Be
  3. Rubber Soul
  4. White Album
  5. Revolver
  6. Help!
  7. Sgt. Peppers

Yes, I neglected a few, and if Yellow Submarinie or Magical Mystery Tour is your favorite Beatles album, too fucking bad. I’m done with them for a while. Also, if one of those is your favorite… how? Seriously. Also, 1 is a compilation album, if that’s what you’re also thinking. I welcome any bold enough to rank those 7 differently. Considering this is my blog, you will most certainly be wrong if you disagree.

Favorite songs: Glass Onion, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, I Will, Yer Blues, Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except for Me and My Monkey, Revolution 1, Savoy Truffle

  2. I appreciate that you got to listen to the Beatles on multiple continents! I think for a certain generation (ahem), that double albums were extra special as there was twice as much music to listen to!

Many people will concur with your ranking, though I’d be willing to have further discussions to lift the White Album higher up on the ranking, “Ob-la-di” and all. Har. Love this: Considering this is my blog, you will most certainly be wrong if you disagree.
