Blood on the Tracks – Bob Dylan

Bob has kind of become meme on my blog at this point. I’ve told countless people about this album a day thing here, and in the copy and paste blurb communication style that I so love (as all of you know, one of my favorite things in the world is explaining the same thing more than once! Music kind of breaks this rule though, plus it ends up plugging my blog in the end so, who cares) sorry about the long parenthesis there, if you’re still with me, I would tell people that one of the reasons that I wanted to do this album thing was to listen to more music “like I’ve never listened to a Bob Dylan album”. I’ve talked about this many times in my reviews, too.

Anyways, Bob has arrived. Hi Bob. I kind of went into this thinking I would hate it but… it’s pretty good? Maybe that explains why people love Bob Dylan, or why he has sold so many records. Two of the main things about Bob Dylan that I hear are:

  1. He can’t sing.
  2. He is a great songwriter.

Both are totally correct. Bob’s lyrics to me are much more poetic than they are musical lyrics – not to discredit other songwriters as not being poetic, I just think his writing style slants much more towards that vs. catchy lyrics. The music here has heavy folk influence and certainly inspires a lot of the sounds that you hear in acoustic indie rock music today.

Can he sing? Not really. You can tell that he does not sing technically well – definitely not from the diaphragm, unless it’s the one that Charlie is thinking of. Does that mean he has a bad voice? Not really. It’s pretty good. And he definitely can play guitar well. Does that make him the best Bob? No, definitely not. But he can be the #2 Bob on this blog. He’s a pretty good Bob, and I’ve officially listened to a Bob Dylan album.

Favorite songs: Tangled Up in Blue, Simple Twist of Fate, Meet Me In The Morning

  1. Make You Feel My Love is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung by one of the ugliest voices of all time. But Bob made that one in the 90s, so maybe a lifetime of being bad made an already subpar voice unlistenable. Let that be a lesson

  2. One of my favorite parts of this review is the link to “Always Sunny”, so thank you for that!

So, it sounds like one of the impetuses for your Blog is that you’d never listened to Bob Dylan. Har. Sounds awful, writes beautifully. There it is! ________________________________
