I have been a Talking Heads fan for a long time – however Remain in Light is where I really feel like they have clicked with me fully and moved into a new tier of fandom for me. This album is fucking amazing.
The first few seconds of this album set the tone for what is to come – incredible ingenuity in vocal structuring, lyrics (TAKE A LOOK AT THEEESE HANDS!) and some serious funk! This album is groovy and funky as hell. The opener is one of those songs that you can listen to 5 times in a row just to listen to all of the different elements individually – the twangy guitar riffs, the insane bass slaps, scattered keys, and David Byrne’s bouncing between rich layered vocals in the Chorus and weird, spacious verses. Fucking incredible.
It keeps building off of this – the upbeat, spastic Crosseyed and Painless, the wild Great Curve (those bongos!), the strange, catchy, seemingly out of this world Once in a Lifetime – incredible. This album is the Talking Heads at their peak.
I will say – you might listen to this album and wonder if I’ve lost my mind. It’s a really really strange output from the Talking Heads – who are already one of the strangest bands out there. If you can get into it though, it’s seriously something to marvel at and just incredibly groovy, funky and catchy – one of the best bands at their peak.
