Self-titled day, apparently. If you’re getting this in your email and wondering if WordPress is glitching or if I’ve completely lost my mind and think that every band just names every album after their band (would be cool), rest assured, all is well.
311 is a band that I heard about from Eric Andre, and a band that I’ve listened to for a few years. They are also a band with some really nice, smooth high points outside of this album, most notably Amber and Champagne (both worth checking out. Also just FYI, I really don’t watch these music videos very often. The thumbnail of Amber looked weird. If the music video sucks, sorry). One of their high points is also the track below, All Mixed Up, which is another fun, groovy reggae influenced alt rock track – which samples Yellowman (if you can figure out where, nice job.)
I have to say though this album is completely all over the place and really not that good of an effort, unless you are into weird rocky white rap. Some of the songs are sort of grungey rock (Down, Jackolantern’s Weather are the best of the bunch there) which work pretty well, then there are the songs that are the aforementioned reggae alt rock hybrids, and then there is just this fucking mess of kinda grungey rap songs that I personally despise.
If you are in your weird era of liking shit like the Jay Z-Linkin Park collab album then go ahead and run the whole thing. Otherwise, stick to the highlights and let 311 have a positive presence in your mind.
Favorite songs: Down, Jackolantern’s weather, All Mixed Up, Hive, Purpose, Loco, Don’t Stay Home, T&P Combo
