Soul.
Minnie Riperton is a 70’s soul legend who is detailed incredibly well in the book “The Meaning of Soul” (which also touches on a ton of other great soul artists, if interested. A bit dense, but very nice). Tragically, she passed at the age of 31 from breast cancer.
In her time, she came out with 6 albums which feature her incredible vocal range, as does the opening track here “Reasons”, a track with incredible guitar work especially for what was coming out of soul at the time (though not to say soul lacked instrumental quality, it was moreso that soul singers carried tracks rather than the instruments).
Perfect Angel is not my favorite soul album to come out of this era, however Minnie was an incredibly talented singer and some of these songs are certainly worth checking out. She really does have a fantastic voice and hits some outrageous notes throughout this.
Favorite songs: Reasons, Take a Little Trip, Perfect Angel, Every Time He Comes Around
