Fusing together elements of R&B, Alternative and Psychedelic Rock, Soul, Funk and Dance music, all while presenting it in with themes of the dystopian future (some of which are hilarious, e.g., The Chrome Shoppe), The Electric Lady (a play off of the Jimi album, of course!) by Janelle Monae is an incredibly ambitious album that mostly meets the mark.
Here and there the album gets a bit too poppy, or the songwriting lacks a bit. However, as someone that had never really heard Janelle Monae’s music, I was very surprised and impressed by how this album delivered sonically. Honestly, I could give a track by track breakdown here but I feel like it would just be redundant. This is a really cool modern R&B album that pulls from a ton of places. Some of these are gonna have to be shorter to get me up to speed. Get with the program.
