Welcome to the first month’s album tiers, each album categorized and given a one sentence recap. Full blurbs available on the new listens page, and monthly wrap-up playlist on main page under playlists. July’s Playlist.

My Favorite New Listen of 2023:

The Strokes – Is This It: So fucking good, I can’t even put it into words.

Fucking Great/God Tier:

LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver: Dance.

Talking Heads – Remain in Light: Freaky, weird, eclectic, funky, amazing.

Toots & The Maytals – In The Dark: Toots channels his inner Otis with some of his best performances and songs.

Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: A bit all over the place, but a fantastic record with some amazing, unique songs.

Pretty damn good:

Aretha Franklin – Aretha Now: Legendary soul artist is great again.

Daft Punk – Discovery: Harder. Better. Faster. Stronger.

Hiromasa Suzuki – High-Flying: Once again… ya like jazz?

Interpol – Turn On The Bright Lights: A really solid, unique 2000s rock record.

Lorde – Pure Heroine: One of the best pop albums of the decade, even I know that.

Parquet Courts – Wide Awake!: A bit oddball, but overall really fucking good.

The Strokes – Room on Fire: Nothing can touch Is This It, but The Strokes are still amazing on this one.

Violent Femmes – Violent Femmes: Another weirdo album with some super catchy songs.

Immortalized tier:

Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin IV: Could’ve left this blank.

Solid:

Arctic Monkeys – AM: A super poppy rock album for a band that actually has a lot more than that.

The Beatles – White Album: Just fucking long for the Beatles, and honestly was pretty happy to have Beatles week come to an end (oops).

Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks: BOB! Bob has arrived.

Fenton Robinson – Somebody Loan Me a Dime: Apparently a Japanese blues legend, Fenton Robinson comes through with smooth cuts.

Janelle Monae – The Electric Lady: An adventurous, solid, out of the box project from Janelle.

Jill Scott – Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1: Smooth but fails to live up to some of my expectations or her other songs.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – PetroDragonic Apocalypse: A bit too metal, but incredibe musically.

Minnie Riperton – Perfect Angel: A really solid soul record.

Solange – A Seat At The Table: Great contemporary R&B touching on a wide range of social issues.

Sting – Ten Summoner’s Tales: Juice wrld.

Sufjan Stevens – Illinois: A bit all over the place and folky for me.

Not bad, but still Coldplay:

Coldplay – Parachutes: See header.

Meh:

Fleetwood Mac – Rumours: May draw some controversy with one person, but it’s just too poppy and isn’t amazing as an overall project.

Leon Thomas – Electric Dusk: Meh.

Vulfpeck – Schvitz: White funk.

Grunge, reggae, white rap:

311 – 311: ?????

Disappointing:

Arlo Parks – My Soft Machine: Come on Arlo.
