Drunk – Thundercat

A very strange man with an argument for being the best bass player of all time (certainly up there!), Thundercat’s Drunk is certainly filled with some absolutely insane bass lines throughout the whole album (listen to that shit below, Jesus).

It is also filled with some very very strange songs. Even some of the songs that I love the most on this thing are really fucking weird. He basically has a yacht rock ballad with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. In 2017. Very strange, kinda good? Very strange.

On A Fan’s Mail (Tron Suite II) (do not ask me what this song title means), Thundercat, over a beautiful instrumental, discusses what it’s like to be a cat, and how everyone wants to be a cat. Literally. Not metaphorically, like this is the song. These are the lyrics to 75% of the song:

Meow, meow
Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow
Meow, meow
Meow

I wish I had nine lives
I bet it feels real nice
Sitting in the sun
Letting the rains wash over me

No one watching over me
I do what I want
Everybody wants to be a cat
It’s cool to be a cat
Everything the light touches
It’s where I would roam
My roar would be so powerful
I would scare off everything

It’s kinda good too. Check that one out. Some of these songs are seriously fucking gorgeous, and for someone that is really not the best singer, Thundercat provides some beautiful vocal layering and harmonies that provide incredible ambiance for these songs driven by his incredible bass playing. The second song (link here, if curious) absolutely cracks me up, it’s like a song on speed that is genuinely hilarious.

He’s certainly enigmatic, and I don’t really know how I feel about this album as a whole. An incredibly talented man who is just really, really bizarre.

I don’t even know what to put as my favorite songs here because it’s really just an experience listening to this whole thing. The one below is my favorite, but some of them I can’t even decide if I like or just think are completely ridiculous.

One response to “Drunk – Thundercat”

  1. I listened to “Captain Stupido” and its silly and non-sensical lyrics remind me of listening to Zappa, whose storis zig-zagged in all sorts of ways but he was such a great guitarist and composer that you had no choice but to go along for the ride.

Did Thundercat tour with Jeff Beck?! ________________________________
