Physical Graffiti – Led Zeppelin

This is one of those albums that prompts many relistens to even begin to understand what it is. Yeah, I didn’t do that. As much as my blog looks to be lacking on its mission – it’s more so just lacking on content rather than listening. Yeah yeah, I’m behind, whatever, but I’ve still been listening quite a bit. So if this review is missing shit, it’s because I missed it too. Or maybe I didn’t. Don’t know.

And also, this thing is a fucking behemoth man. The deluxe is over 2 hours, and even without the weird mixes at the end, it’s still a big fucking album, well over 90 minutes.

There is a wide, wide breadth of shit sonically on this, especially for Zeppelin, ranging from 9 minute rock anthems (Kashmir, which is kinda meh for me), clav-based funky songs (Trampled Under Foot), some more melancholic, beautiful songs (Down by the Seaside and Ten Years Gone, the latter of which is really fucking good), along with some classic Zeppelin songs.

Is it a really strong album filled with good songs? Yes. Is it way too fucking long for anyone that isn’t obsessed with Zeppelin? Yes. Do shorter albums make better listening experiences? Not always, but often yes, especially in my book. Give me your 40 best minutes rather than expanding it and expanding it. This perspective is a bit flawed with double albums, but hey, it’s all under the same name, innit? Still, this album does have some amazing songs and is worth checking out if you have a spare 2 hours to dial into Robert Plant.

Favorite songs: Custard Pie, In My Time of Dying, Houses of the Holy, Trampled Under Foot, Down by the Seaside, Ten Years Gone, Sick Again

  1. Great review—I agree that some bands can pull of 7-8 minute songs, and it’s worth that 90-minute listen (unless you’re trying to churn out a blog. Har)… such as the awesome DakhaBrakha, or even our God, Stevie Wonder.

I do think that there can be some repetitive sounds with Zep. You chose one of the best tunes on the album, so best to crank it to “11”… ________________________________
