Utopia – Travis Scott

This one might be a bit loaded. First off, if I was 16, I cannot overstate how excited this would have made me, and how much I probably would have loved this album. I’ve talked about it in my Malibu review, but there was a time where this is the type of shit I ate up (though maybe not the Bad Bunny/Weeknd song, I fucking hate that shit, just shoving artists together, wtf).

I feel incredibly disconnected to most rap now, and that is definitely influencing how I consume stuff like this. I haven’t listened to a lot of the major releases that have come out this year, and while they continue to sit on my Listen 2 playlist (e.g., Uzi Pink Tape), I don’t really have a desire to.

I don’t necessarily think that this is a result of me not listening to enough rap though, or listening to more from other genres. The popular opinion of rap is something I cannot get behind anymore, and this album is a solid exemplification of that. One of the most popular songs on this is Meltdown with Drake.

When I say Drake is whispering on this song, I am not exaggerating. And people love it! A rap verse with Drake whispering. What the fuck. Not only that, but he’s saying stuff like, and this is verbatim, this:

I pull out a million and stare at the shit
My dick just got hard ’cause a wire just hit

OK???? Thanks Aubrey. That is horrible. I wrote down notes as I was listening to this and just now, as I go back and relisten to a few of the songs while I write, I am in agony listening to that song. It’s horseshit. Not only that, but it’s followed up by “FEIN”, a song that is emblematic of what a lot of modern rap sounds like: insane droning synths with someone yelling nasally. I hate it.

I have so, so many criticisms for this album. I will keep it to a few more, but trust me when I say it can go much deeper than this.

  • The Topia Twins feature is so bad. Rob49 came through with maybe the worst verse I’ve heard.
  • Why do I see a song featuring Yung Lean and Dave Chappelle
  • LOOOOVE is so bad. Like so bad.

Here’s what I can say. The first two songs are pretty good. The one with Beyonce is also pretty good, and the one after that is probably my favorite. James Blake song is also decent, but once it gets there I am so tired. This has made me feel so disconnected from the yout. This album has gotten rave reviews and it’s maybe my least favorite of the year. Jesus Christ Travis. I’m not even going to link my favorite song below. You have to listen to the fucking Drake whisper.

Favorite songs: DELRESTO (ECHOES), I KNOW ?, SKITZO, TIL FURTHER NOTICE

One response to “Utopia – Travis Scott”

  1. It’s always an awkward delight to look back at what occupied our musical spaces and to realize how far we’ve learned since then! Some of the early mix-tapes I have had some people who make me cringe the way you are throughout this review. And the good news is that there’s still much more to DISCOVER!

Har: This has made me feel so disconnected from the yout. This album has gotten rave reviews and it’s maybe my least favorite of the year. Jesus Christ Travis. ________________________________
