A 90’s legend, and two sides of the indie spectrum.
Only feel like reading about music you think you might like? I get it. This post features reviews from Mary J Blige (R&B), King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (Indie/Alt Rock), Moonchild (Indie/Alternative). I’m on my iPad and I can’t make HTML anchors. Deal with it.
Mary J Blige – What’s the 411 (R&B)
I feel like Mary J is the artist that you have 100% hear of but can’t name a song by (though I feel like a mysterious, blog-frequenting character named Dragon Dee would be upset to hear that and is tuned into like 3 specific Mary J songs).
Much like the Wu-Tang album was very much representative of a certain point in hip-hop, What’s the 411 is that to 90’s R&B. The essence of the genre at the time in somewhat of an indescribable way – the beats, the vocal arrangements, the messaging, all of the above. If that’s your shit, this is made for you. If not, then check out the Rufus & Chaka Khan cover below.
Favorite songs: Real Love, Sweet Thing
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard – I’m In Your Mind Fuzz (Indie/Alt Rock)
The Gizz boys are a staple of this blog, and for good reason. They are incredibly versatile, prolific, and produce a ton of variety that is almost all great. I’m in Your Mind Fuzz contains a lot of their different sounds in one package – however they excel where, to me, they typically do – on the melodic psychedelic rock songs (or maybe that’s just my taste). Overall, I enjoyed this record but think that, objectively, their later releases show both a display of their growth and maturity, resulting in higher quality records.
Favorite songs: Cellophane, Empty, Hot Water, Slow Jam 1, Her and I (Slow Jam 2)
Moonchild – The List (Indie/Alternative)
A really nice, groovy record that nears R&B in a lot of their compositions. I often find myself not only going back to this record but craving music that sounds like Moonchild – laid back, simple grooves, sort of Khraungbin-esque guitar riffs, really just good music. I dig it. Groovy!
Favorite songs: Cure, Every Part (For Linda), The Lost , Run Away, Show the Way, Let You Go
