  • New Listens 9/19 – 9/21: Curtis Mayfield, PUP, and PUP again

We’re kind of in “bang out some posts” mode here. Hopefully you get some recs. Only feel like reading about music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews from Curtis Mayfield (Funk/Soul), PUP (Punk), and PUP (Punk). Curtis Mayfield – Curtis (Funk/Soul) A 70’s soul legend, Curtis Continue reading

  • New Listens 9/4 – 9/6: HOMESHAKE, Darondo, Heatwave

Do I even really need to say anything at this point? Honestly I’m more just letting myself down. It does turn out that you have less time to work on something when you have a legit 40 hour work week (I’m working 8 hours a day – and it feels like, wrong. It should max Continue reading

  • New Listens 9/1-9/3: Jamiroquai, Portishead, Outkast

Did somebody say 90’s? (yeah, Jamiroquai album was 2001, ok. stfu) Only feel like reading about music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews on albums from Jamiroquai (R&B., Funk?) Portishead (? I don’t know. Groovy?) and Outkast (Hip hip hip hip hop!). Jamiroquai – A Funk Odyssey (R&B, Funk, but Continue reading

  • Vulfpeck – Schvitz

Let’s get this out of the way – Vulfpeck is an all white funk band. AKA an oxymoron, and definitely an argument of the kinds of groups that perpetrate the Elvis taking from Little Richard kind of thing. While I don’t think it necessary applies to a band that is not that well known, it Continue reading

  • I Want You – Marvin Gaye

Don’t tell anyone but I think this is better than What’s Going On. At least damn close to it, the only thing that this album is lacking is the powerful songwriting. Which, upon writing, does feel like quite an important factor. This album kicks off with the now (re)popularized I Want You, the foundation of Continue reading

  • Central Heating – Heatwave

A great funk-disco band consisting of members from Ohio, England, and the Czech Republic. Some seriously great, groovy cuts on this, kind of an Earth Wind and Fire vibe at times. Great instrumentalization, classic funk (the clav on Whack that Axe!). But honestly, check out these sweaters. Need I say more? You know what’s coming Continue reading

  • Action – The Blackbyrds

Great jazzy, funky tunes from a relatively unknown band, at least to me. Highly recommend checking them out if parliament type music is what you fancy. Also some fantastic instrumentalization (a word) in the form of some harmonic backings or straight out solos. Can get a bit 80s at times, especially for a 90s album. Continue reading

  • Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On – Funkadelic

A luscious bitch she is, trueBut it’s not nice to fool mother natureThe proud mother of god like all ho’sIs jealous of her own shadowWho is this young Vic Tanny bitchWho wish to be queen for a day?Who would sacrifice the great grandsons and daughters of her jealous motherBy sucking their brain until their ability Continue reading

  • Mothership Connection – Parliament

One of a motherfunkin kind! This was my second front to back listen to Mothership Connection and it had been far too long since my first. It’s so fucking good!! I almost don’t have much to say it’s just a classic. Every song is good. In fact I won’t say much. Just watch the Mothership Continue reading
