2000 by Joey Badass is the NY based artist’s 5th project, or 6th if you count the Flatbush Zombies collab, however somewhat serves as a follow up to the well renowned 1999, an album that burst him onto the radar of up and coming rappers, still holds up, and is especially impressive given that Joey was 17 years old when it came out. Waves remains one of my favorite laid back rap songs, and the Steez features stand out.
2000 is very much so a follow-up to this in it’s inherent structure, it being a “rap album” (as in, much more a let me rap to you album than one with elaborate melodic structures or poppier cuts like All-Amerikkkan Badass) with a very, very New York sound. The album isn’t off the charts incredible or groundbreaking by any means, but also not a poor or even average effort by the same means. I will always have an affinity for Joey because of 1999 so a return to the sound is quite welcomes, even amongst the polarizing nature of the “return to your old sound” takes. This album is great for Joey Badass fans as well as fans of NY style rap. Great beats, great raps, great features.
Favorite songs: Make Me Feel, Where I Belong, Zipcodes, Show Me (s/o Men I Trust), Wanna Be Loved, Head High.
