A relisten – more than 5 years ago was last spin. Chance’s Acid Rap really put him on the mainstream after 10 day and at the time, helped his reputation a bit. I think many forget how polarizing Chance’s voice was – some people thought it was absolutely terrible and some loved it and his music. It was, regardless, a huge impact on the high school stoner rotation, and mostly well-received. Now, he is ooo I love my wife and people clamor for him to go back to this sound.
I understand the artist’s position on moving on with their sound and not wanting to revisit old sounds. Stylistically, you evolve, progress, or just want to listen to different sounds. Even as a music consumer, (mostly) you evolve, you get into phases with different sounds/genres/artists. Sometimes the old stuff still hits just as hard, sometimes you look back on it in disgust (how could I have liked any New Boyz!). However, Acid Rap Chance is wanted by all and I think for good reason. The beats on this album are great, the hooks and lyrics are catchy, and the sound is way more raw than some of the later stuff, even aside from the travesty that was The Big Day. Sure, you can listen to Smoke Break and enjoy it, I do too. But it will never match the magic that came from listening to Pusha Man for the first time. An important album in the mixtape era and in the 2010’s, and one that deserves lots of praise.
