Foo Fighters – The Colour and The Shape

I don’t have as much detail on the making as this one, which you can attribute to Dave Grohl’s description of Foo Fighters being much more detailed (and also pertinent) in his book. I think so far, this album is solidified as #2. The album feels like it has much more mainstream rock qualities in the riffs (subjective, yes), which loses me a bit at some points – e.g. My Hero really falls flat for me, and even though I do like See You, it kind of also falls into that bucket.

One interesting thing for me that I kept coming back to when listening to this album – Nirvana’s music has a distinct quiet/loud structure to a lot of the songs – I don’t think I need to cite examples here, all you really need to have heard is that Nirvana song.

This album really employs that on a lot of the songs. Contrasting it to the first release, it seems much more apparent. However, I do think the first album does play off the same dynamic- just much more song to song within the flow of the album than the actual songs being quiet/loud. Does that make any sense? Not sure. I could explain it more, but I think if you get it, you get it.

Favorite songs: Doll, Monkey Wrench, Hey, Johnny Park!, My Poor Brain, Up In Arms, See You, Everlong

  1. Sorry to say but never been a fan of the Foo-Fighters, I don’t hear anything that I’d like to listen to at any length, and would probably turn the station (if listening on the radio–old school).
