Zeppelin’s discography is pleasantly surprising me. To some, that may come off as a completely idiotic statement – but remember I am biased towards funk, R&B, etc. Or at least that’s what I think.
This album is fantastic. I think it might be Zeppelin at it’s best – though I do plan to continue to explore. First, as mentioned in my previous review, it has Ramble On (not first, actually track 7, but you get it), which is arguably my favorite song from them. It also comes with the classic intro Whole Lotta Love, which you probably know if you don’t by the name.
I was totally awed by The Lemon Song. If you haven’t heard this song in the last day, go listen to it. Holy shit, that bassline is incredible. It also comes with a serious guitar solo from Jimmy Page, and the little interspersed guitar riffs are equally incredible. Page really is amazing on this record, the guitar solo on Heartbreaker is fucking fantastic.
Moby Dick. I could use about 5000 sports announcer cliches to describe what Bonham is on this track. I’ll give you three. He’s a man on a mission. Mama, there goes that man. Onions, double order.
If you want to hear a level on drums that neither you, nor I, nor 99.9% of the population will ever come close to, listen to that.
The entire album also has amazing song progressions, breakdowns, and tempo shifts, something I can try to capture as eloquently as possible, but would rather leave it to you all to listen. I would mark this one as required if you are at all interested in this type of music. Amazing.
Favorite songs: Whole Lotta Love, What Is and What Never Should Be, The Lemon Song, Heartbreaker, Ramble On, Moby Dick
