The Low End Theory – A Tribe Called Quest

Potential surprise first listen here – may be a relisten – who knows – how many dashes – morse code (that’s prose – here I go – OK I’ll stop).

The Low End Theory is undeniably lauded as one of, if not the best Jazz-rap album of all time, and my experience with it certainly backs up this claim. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg perform masterclasses on this one, with incredible lyricism, flows, and an innumerable amount of obscure sports references (never before did I imagine listening to an album and hearing both Scott Skiles and Lou Brock references). The beats are fucking fantastic, really what more is there to say. Amazing Tribe album.

Favorite songs: Excursions, Buggin’ Out, Butter, Verses From The Abstract (a Heatwave sample on this one!), Vibes and Stuff, Check the Rhime, Jazz (We’ve Got)

  1. I really love this band—their rap isn’t repetitive in a way that annoys me (as a listener)…lots of playful FLOW. What’s not to love?! ________________________________
