Haitus Kaiyote has frequented my blog, and is a band that I’ve listened to in reverse chronological order. Tawk Tomahawk, their 2013 debut, sets the sonic tone for a lot of their future releases – neo-soul via rhodes, lots of interesting and unique grooves, and often out of the box vocal structuring.
This album does serve as a less mature effort than their future releases – which are for me topped by Choose Your Weapon in 2015 – an album that is so groovy, jazzy, and the chords are beautiful throughout. While this album’s high points certainly hit the bar set by Choose Your Weapon – the problem is that they are just high points, whereas their other releases set the groovy standard very high. I don’t think it’s a bad record – in fact it would be one of the best from a lot of artists – however it being Hiatus Kaiyote, I would say this ranks as their worst.
Also, weird move to put the same song on an album twice? If you get a Q-Tip feature, use that version.
