Kid A – Radiohead

Kid A is a very electronic, synth based album that is much more melancholic than a lot of Radiohead’s other music – which is quite the feat given how often Radiohead’s music does dip into the melancholic – alongside the trope that if you are listening to Radiohead a lot, something must be wrong (all good over here!).

While Kid A is certainly not my favorite Radiohead release, it does further my appreciation for the band and their creativity. Listening to this album with something like The Bends, you would never think that they were done by the same band, let alone being releases only 5 years apart. Yes, I am a Radiohead fan now. I know.

In terms of their overarching discography, that of which I’ve listened to 4/5 of their major albums (Pablo Honey has yet to be spun, and may not be spun, Creep is just too overplayed and too Thom pretentious. And yes, I do think he is still pretentious, that one I got right), I prefer 1. OK Computer (trend-setting alt-rock), 2. The Bends (more straightforward rock, but very good) 3. In Rainbows (sort of a mix between OK Computer and Kid A, but with one of my favorite Radiohead songs) then 4. Kid A. It’s totally preference here though, which is rare, as all of these albums are musically great.

Favorite songs: Everything In It’s Right Place, The National Anthem, Morning Bell

  1. I cannot thank you for introducing me to this song—It speaks to me in its controlled chaos, stinky groove, and genre-defying categorization. Is it space-rock? Jazz? Rock?

Love that you can find the melancholy underneath it all…
