Turn on the Lights – Interpol

Turn on the Lights, like the recently reviewed Illinois, is another mid 00s critically acclaimed album that I had never heard of, from a band I had never heard of. This album certainly doesn’t break any new ground sonically – it’s very much so a rock record, albeit with a bit of quirks here and there, especially in the songwriting. The lyricism and the vocals remind me a bit of the Talking Heads/David Byrne, along with LCD Soundsystem in it’s oddball quality and the distinct delivery that both of those vocalists exude.

The sort of Arcade Fire/wall of sound mixing that Interpol uses is nice to hear on a rock record, and their grooves are, well, groovy. Much more of a poppier rock record than say, grungey or metal-y. I wasn’t blown away by this record, however it is a nice introduction to a band with some cool stuff (my eloquence improves by the post, eh?), and the best songs are definitely worth listening to.

Favorite songs: Obstacle 1, PDA, Say Hello to the Angels, Obstacle 2, Stella was a diver and she was always down

  1. Meh. I am not a fan. I feel as though it’s too busy, repetitive and straining to find their Bowie leggings… ________________________________
