Hello again, motherfuckers. Should I even preface these brief hiatus’s (hiati?) with this greeting anymore? They are becoming much closer to frequent than few and far between. While my output may not be as prolific as that of a man working 12 hours a week – which feels like a distant memory 😦 – I’ll be better. Hold me to this pledge.
Pure Heroine by Lorde is one of the more impressive debuts for a major pop artist, let alone by a 17 year old. Royals propelled Lorde to the mainstream and is one of those songs that now kinda falls into the “Happy” bucket – if you still like it, respect, but I totally understand if it’s absolutely torturous to listen to at this point. This album definitely gets a bit too poppy in the musical elements for my personal taste, however I still think it’s really good and that its high points hold up 10 years later.
Some of the spacious, synth heavy songs feel way ahead of their time (400 Lux, Glory and Gore) and Lorde’s songwriting throughout showcases incredible originality, one of my main critiques and drawbacks from pop music in general. Not to mention she has a fantastic pop range vocally, great harmonies and overall just comes through with a bunch of solid songs here. Much respect to Lorde.
For all my pop lovers that are reading this blog (one of you? two?) – I hope that you rejoice in the fact that something that’s a pure pop album has not only entered this blog’s 200+ albums, but comes away with high marks.
Favorite songs: Tennis Court, 400 Lux, Buzzcut Season, Glory and Gore
