Be – Common

With AI, we can envision a Common album that’s actually really good?

This is definitely not because of Common – the man who starred in an AI commercial where he raps about artificial intelligence to strangers while walking down the sidewalk (I’m not even going to link that one for you, you’re welcome), the man who introduced the 2020 All stars with some hilarious lines (still can’t believe this one is real), the man who absolutely ruined one of the hardest Kanye songs of all time with some absolutely horrible lines, including:

“Real rappers is hard to find, like a remote”

J Cole before there was a J Cole, even? Anyways, this album is produced entirely by Kanye before he got big, and holy shit is he in top form. This has some of Kanye’s best beats from not only the soul-chopping era that he was in but just from his whole career in general.

Right from the incredible stand-up bass intro song, to GO!, to just amazing rap songs all the way through (including a fantastic performance at the Chappelle show, which is featured below), Kanye carries this album instrumentally and even hops on a few songs with some great features.

And for the most part, Common strays away from his incredibly corny nature that he has, and really delivers some good shit. He really doesn’t need to do too much, just not be outrageously corny, because he has a fantastic rap voice and is a smart dude, just sometimes he really kills me. A good Common album, and absolutely worth checking out.

Favorite songs: Be (intro), GO!, Testify, Love is…, Chi-City, The Food (live), Real People, They Say, It’s Your World

  1. Okay, the AI comment has me freaking-out over here!!!

That said, I didn’t know this collaboration ever-existed, so I’m personally grateful for the introduction and the ways in which you provide historical context for a musicians evolution…or devolution! ________________________________
