New Listens 9/4 – 9/6: HOMESHAKE, Darondo, Heatwave

Do I even really need to say anything at this point? Honestly I’m more just letting myself down. It does turn out that you have less time to work on something when you have a legit 40 hour work week (I’m working 8 hours a day – and it feels like, wrong. It should max out at 5) compared to 12. Anywho.

There’s really only one way to go about this. I’m behind – a lot more on reviews than albums – the actual album goal is still in sight. Thus, these are probably gonna be pretty bite size for a while.

Only feel like reading about music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews on albums from HOMESHAKE (Indie) Darondo (Funk/Soul) and Heatwave (Funk).

Fresh Air – HOMESHAKE (Indie)

While I feel like I was a bit dismissive of the first HOMESHAKE album on this blog as a bit of “the epitome of Indie” (or maybe just reductive) – this one has stuck with me and in the rotation a lot more than his 2015 effort. Songs like “Call Me Up” and “Every Single Thing” really nail the dreamy, groovy, Indie sound that I find myself coveting from time to time. He definitely is pretty limited vocally, but the riffs and compositions are simple, groovy, dreamy, and I really like some of these songs. Certainly some misses, and as an overall album it’s pretty OK, but the good songs stick around.

Favorite songs: Call Me Up, Every Single Thing, Getting Down Pt II (He’s Cooling Down), TV Volume

Let My People Go – Darondo (Funk/Soul)

A gem of an album! I had only heard “Didn’t I” because of a Vic Mensa song – btw, if you are a reader of my blog and know Vic Mensa, please let me know. For most of you, that would surprise me.

“Didn’t I” is a fantastic soul song with some seriously amazing vocals throughout, but this album is much more than that. From the intro track, Darondo shows his vocal chops over beautiful interspersed guitar riffs and a nice fat, fat bassline. This is just a great album that dips into Soul, Funk, Jazz, and more, with a shit ton of rhythm and groove. Check it out!

Favorite songs: Let My People Go, Didn’t I, My Momma and My Poppa, Sure Know How to Love Me, True

Too Hot To Handle – Heatwave (Funk)

So late 70’s. So Funk. Outrageous titles. It’s great. I say no more. Listen to 30 seconds of the below song and you’ll know all you need to know.

Favorite songs: Too Hot to Handle, Boogie Nights, Ain’t no Half Steppin’, Always and Forever, Turn off the Lamplight,

One response to “New Listens 9/4 – 9/6: HOMESHAKE, Darondo, Heatwave”

  1. So, we could certainly have a really long discussion about that work/life balance, so, for now, let’s keep that 5-hour workday in our sights!

Homeshake: Pretty chill sound overall, although a bit underwhelming.

Daronda: Oh wow, now this is some real stinky stuff—in the best way! Those horn hooks, the earnest vocals, the slow groove. Sweet. p.s. I only know Vic Mensa thanks to your awesome blog.

Heatwave: The sound that all ’70’s kids danced too—including all your family members, in bell-bottoms no less! ________________________________
