New Listens 9/22 – 9/24: Shuggie Otis, Nick Hakim, Outkast (again)

You gotta understand that we’re diggin’ deep here, sonny.

Only feel like listening to music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews from Shuggie Otis (Blues), Nick Hakim (Indie), OutKast (Rap)

Shuggie Otis – Inspiration Information/Wings of Love (Blues)

Damn! I just realized this was a double album. I was about to scathe Shuggie for his elongated ways… I apologize for my thoughts, Shuggie. How many double albums equals another listen? 1? Cause I can add about 10 more on for that. How bout that? How bout it, huh? Push pins

Anyways, regardless of how you cut it, this is damn near 2 hours of Shuggie. I lost the plot FREQUENTLY on this one. I feel like if I went back to this, would probably uncover some gems, but I’m not going back in for 2 more hours of Shuggie. Sorry baby!

Great blues work throughout this record though, and he does delve a lot more into R&B/Soul than a straight out Blues album (like his previously reviewed record on here). However, I prefer Blues Shuggie, so this is #2 out of 2 listens on here.

Favorite songs: Inspiration Information, Magic, Tryin’ To Get Close to You

Nick Hakim – Green Twins (Indie)

I’m not going to beat around the bush here, this is one of the most forgettable albums that I’ve heard this year along with that Conrad guy that I listened to on the bus to Nerja. I really don’t have much to say about this one other than the fact that it’s pretty mediocre Indie music. I’m sorry Nick and all the Nick lovers if I let you down. I like two songs off of it though!

Favorite songs: Bet She Looks Like You, Cuffed

OutKast – Stankonia (Rap)

OK, another short one here because I’ve gone so much into OutKast lately. You know what the deal is here. You know who they are, you know what they sound like. Stankonia, as an album, has some of their most iconic songs but as a whole falls far short of ATLiens, Southernplayalistic (though many would debate that), Aquemini, and probably Speakerboxx/Love Below as well.

Also, required music knowledge – Ms. Jackson is written for Erykah Badu’s mom. And yes, I did listen to the Andre flute album. I’ll write about it.

Favorite songs: So Fresh So Clean, Ms. Jackson, Spaghetti Junction, Bombs over Baghdad, Humble Mumble

  1. SUGGIE OTIS: Thank you for digging deep, Sonny. You might appreciate the album “Sneaking Sally Through the Alleyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V592ldkLMBs&list=OLAK5uy_kEg6Q5CMB_hoSpaeDj-YNRsHHJecrmF2o” by the late Robert Palmer, whose voice is soulful and he has a groovier groove (to me). There’s still time.

NICK HAKIM: I appreciate that people know where you stand.

OUTKAST: Aquemini is a masterpiece, so I’m psyched to explore Skankonia. SO fun!
