All over the place, but rock.
Only feel like music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews from The White Stripes (Rock), IDLES (Punk), and Brad Stank (Indie)
The White Stripes – Elephant (Rock)
Elephant is very much so a continuation of The White Stripes sound and discography – and while that may read as an incredibly obvious statement, I mean that strictly in the sense of it’s almost a White Blood Cells part two. There is very little to differentiate from the two albums save for Seven Nation Army – sonically they are very similar, to the point where this review could’ve simply been: You know what you’re getting into with this one. Though there are some cool blues influences on this one that I didn’t hear as much of in White Blood Cells. Can’t believe they are a divorced couple. Let’s all jam to Seven Nation Army.
Favorite songs: Seven Nation Army, There’s No Home For You Here, I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother’s Heart, You’ve Got Her In Your Pocket, Ball and Biscuit, The Hardest Button to Button, Hypnotize
IDLES – Brutalism (Punk)
While I wouldn’t say any of the IDLES work is necessarily not brutal, brash, another B word that signifies the same thing, Brutalism certainly does fit it’s name, especially when you’re running through Al Green’s discography at the time of this writing. However, while I am typically a fan of melody in my punk rock, a minor step away from that front does not hurt one of the best punk bands in the 21st century. I don’t think it matches some of their later records – namely Joy As An Act of Resistance – but it certainly sets a very important scene for the band to capitalize off of.
P.S. I have tickets to see them in September and no one wants to go. Get with the times people.
Favorite songs: Well Done, Mother, Date Night, Faith in the City, Rachel Khoo
Brad Stank – Eternal Slowdown (Indie)
This is one of those records that is not musically groundbreaking but continues to maintain its place in the rotation. I totally understand if you don’t like this, but it’s basically just twangy guitar grooves, laid back vocals and instrumental compositions, and for lack of a more eloquent phrase, just some chill guitar music. It’s nice. Brad Stank. Music!
P.S.S If you’ve made it this far, be prepared for a new direction in the blog next year. It will continue, but likely in a different fashion 🙂
Favorite songs: Pond Weed, Condemned to be Freaky, Take Me to the Crib
