Now that is a trio. My fun fact will come later in the reviews.
Only feel like music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews from Pitbull (Mr. 305 Music), Danny Brown (Rap, Underground Hip-Hop), and Andre 3000 (Normally Rap, but this time, flute).
Pitbull – Planet Pit (Mr. 305)
Better yet, go to Times Square, take a picture of me with a Kodak. I remember when this album came out, I was hanging out at home listening to the top 100 songs of the year on the radio. I was greatly disappointed to hear Give Me Everything get the #1 spot, especially in such a stacked year.
I unironically love Pitbull. Well, I guess there is some irony in it. I do, in all sincerity, think a middle aged man (who goes by Mr. 305, who turned to Mr. Worldwide) performing in a white tank, sweating his life away and going as hard as he can is fucking fantastic.
Let’s talk about Planet Pit. Incredible three song run to kick it off post-intro: Give Me Everything, Rain Over Me, Hey Baby (Drop it to the floor). All classics that are required listening when shudder shades are equipped. We get into two dogshit songs, then redemption with Shake Senora. Honestly, yes, this album has some hits, but I want you all to know about the song Something For The DJs.
This may be the greatest song of all time. Pitbull starts by telling us that it’s him, and he’s up in this thing. Then he goes into many many childhood limerics that he repurposes, including the first:
If you sexy and you know it, clap your hands.
The song then breaks, and he tells the DJ what to do. Cut, scratch, don’t stop. Then, I swear to god, he starts his verse with “how much would could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood”. He does this MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE SONG!!
The end of the verse is him saying “down” like 10 times, then instructing women to turn that booty up. This all repeats! Please listen to this song. It’s fucking insane.
Favorite songs: N/A Dale.
Danny Brown – XXX (Rap/Underground Hip-Hop)
There may not be a sharper contrast between two reviews. Danny Brown is an underground legend known for out of this world experimental beats, a super nasally, high-pitched delivery, and some often incredibly flagrant lyrics that I will not recite. XXX is an insanely good rap album. The beats are so inventive, Danny’s variety of deliveries and lyricism hit on damn near every single song. It’s an underground hip-hop gem and one to marvel over. However, most of you will probably hate it. The definition of an acquired taste.
Favorite songs: XXX, Pac Blood, Radio Song, Lie4, Bruiser Brigade, Monopoly, DNA, 30
Andre 3000 – New Blue Sun (Flute)
There have been many rap genre crossovers in our history. Jay-Z collaborated with Linkin Park, an album that was his only on Spotify for some time, and also one that is not to be spoken of. Lil Yachty ventured into psych rock. Some say music was reinvented the day Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons performed. I could go on and on.
Andre 3000 has always been one of the odder dudes in rap, and his mystique only grew as Outkast’s output faded. That’s basically to say, if there was gonna be an album of ethereal, dreamy flute songs from a dude that rapped, it would be Andre 3000. But, the fuck am I gonna say about it? It’s a 90 minute album of the flute. It’s nice, but it’s also what it is.
Favorite songs: N/a flute. Here’s a 10 minute song called “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into a Panther and Started Making These Low Register Purring Noises That I Couldn’t Control… Shit Was Wild”.
