New Listens 10/10 – 10/12: Bruno Mars, Action Bronson, Babe Rainbow

I’m out of tidbits.

Use these links to jump to reviews from Bruno Mars (Pop), Action Bronson (Rap), Babe Rainbow (psych rock).

Bruno Mars – 24K Magic (Pop)

I hate to say this, but this is much closer to Planet Pit than I ever hoped it would be. I really like and respect Bruno – as a singer, dancer, performer, person, etc. He is a 2010s pop icon that I feel like is often overlooked in the general landscape. Silk Sonic endeared me to him greatly, even if the next .Paak show I go to will be like $300.

But this album is so, so mid. Starts out with some fucking great talkbox and a real good pop song, and even the second song, while corny, is pretty good. It then gets really, really mediocre with two exceptions, one of them is below and so fantastic. I could go further here but I think my Pitbull comp is damning enough. I had high hopes Bruno! I do love the below song though. Also his genre on Google (which is often horribly wrong, but always comes up when I pull these songs) is “Children’s Music”. Not quite.

Favorite songs: 24K Magic, Chunky, Calling All My Lovelies

Action Bronson – Lamb Over Rice (Rap)

One of my favorite intro songs out there by two of my favorite dudes in the rap sphere. Action Bronson needs no introduction, he is one of the most hilarious dudes rapping, and that rapping also comes in the form of a deeply NY flow that sounds eerily like Ghostface sometimes. This album is filled with his hilarious lines, and it’s all over Alchemist production – who is my personal favorite producer. Go listen to some rap.

Favorite songs: DMTri, Tear Away Shorts

Babe Rainbow – The Babe Rainbow (Psych Rock)

This album is a show of how oversaturated psych rock is. I won’t mince words here, it’s just a mediocre modern day indie psych rock record with some good songs here and there.

Favorite songs: Peace Blossom Boogy

  1. “Out of tidbits”. Har.

Bruno Mars: Your review speaks to why the mixed tape of yore was such an awesome present (to yourself, and those you love, or those you want to love, such as in High Fidelity)! You could just pick out your favorite Bruno and Silk Sonic songs and cruise around.

Action Bronson: I’m a fan. He takes this same panache to his cookbook. Woot!

Babe Rainbow: I do wonder how you come across some of these albums. The cover looks so Woodstock-y, yet, upon closer inspection, I see it’s actually just a bunch of hipsters (and a dog), where you otherwise wouldn’t want to be. Har. ________________________________
